Dell acquires cloud client computing leader Wyse Technology
On Friday Dell announced its acquisition of Wyse Technology, a leader in cloud client computing, enhancing the company’s desktop virtualization capabilities.
The acquisition, which was completed for an undisclosed fee, will see Dell combine its existing server, storage and networking solutions with Wyse’s new technology to position itself as true end-to-end IT vendor.
“We’re excited to officially welcome Wyse to Dell and help extend its industry-leading efforts to a broader range of customers and partners,” said Jeff Clarke, Dell vice chairman and president, Global Operations and End User Computing Solutions. “We believe the Dell Wyse capabilities, combined with our previous desktop virtualization offerings and the strength of the Dell enterprise portfolio, provides the most comprehensive and competitive DVS solution available today.”
Jack Narcotta, an analyst at TBR, said in April that an end-to-end virtualization solution is “critical” as Dell makes its transition from high-volume hardware manufacturer to trusted provider of comprehensive services and solutions. The computer maker also acquired a further 180 patents as part of the deal, both issued and pending, covering its solutions, software and differentiated intellectual property.
The acquisition comes just months after Dell claimed that it is “no longer about shiny boxes” and now sees itself as an IT solutions company focusing more on the enterprise market.
