Music fans of all ages — from young teens to ol’ duffers — turned out to see not one, but two slices of 90s Manchester Royalty at Leeds’ O2 Academy.
Supporting the main draw, The Happy Mondays, were Inspiral Carpets, who kicked off the proceedings with ‘Joe’ from their EP of the same title, much to the crowd’s delight. A chorus of “boos” seemed to erupt from the crowd shortly after the song finished, and keyboard player Clint Boon, sensing the confusion from some segments of the audience, took a moment to explain that the “booing” was in fact “mooing” — a complimentary noise made by Carpets’ fans in reference to their debut album Cow.
When the band got round to playing ‘This is How It Feels’, everyone under the roof joined in with singer Stephen Holt — even one of the security staff. Other highlights included ‘I Want You’ with its spoken word Mark E Smith backing and ‘Saturn 5′, which rounded off the set, prompting big grins from both the band and the crowd.
